Manchester United were eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday after losing 2-1 to Sevilla at Old Trafford.
Wissam Ben Yedder was the hero for the Spanish club, as his brace gave Sevilla a two-goal cushion, before Romelu Lukaku struck late in the second half to give some respite to United. However, it proved inconsequential as Vincenzo Montella’s side triumphed 2-1 on aggregate after the first leg ended 0-0.
The win over Liverpool at the weekend meant more than just the three points it afforded United, as it also provided them the perfect fodder for tonight’s clash, and it looked to be evident very early on, as in the fifth minute, they went close, forcing a save from the Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico, who reacted well to deny a long-range free kick from Marcus Rashford. A déjà vu of Liverpool? We shall see.
However, five minutes later, Sevilla had their chance when Ever Banega floated a good corner into the box that Joaquin Correa got on the end of, but his effort on goal scorched just over the bar.
The game appeared to slow down a bit afterwards, as no chances were created until the 28th minute, when Luis Muriel picked up the ball in space and from inside the penalty area and sent a shot inches wide of the right post.
Marouane Fellaini then had a chance 10 minutes later, as he ran onto a loose pass inside the box and released a tremendous shot towards the middle of the goal. However, Sergio Rico anticipated the shot and made a decent save.
Both teams would go into the break level, with the game delicately poised at this point.
And on resumption from the break, it didn’t take too long before another opportunity came, but Sergio Rico pulled off another great save to deny Jesse Lingard.
Paul Pogba came off the bench came close to scoring after he unleashed a powerful shot which went a whisker wide of the left post.
But two minutes later, United would go behind. Pablo Sarabia slipped a clever pass through to Ben Yedder, who moved inside the box and sent a measured shot beyond the keeper and into the right side of the goal. 1-0 Sevilla.
Four minutes later, Ben Yedder completed his brace after Joaquin Correa won a simple header before the striker nodded the ball into the back of the net.
And with time running out, Marcus Rashford produced a cross from a corner and found Lukaku inside the box. He pulled the trigger and scored, sending the ball inside the left post.
