...as Panel on RUGIPO Crisis Submits Report
After Two months of its constitution, the Four-Man Committee of Inquiry set up by Ondo State Governor, Barr. Rotimi Akeredolu to to look into the immediate and remote causes of the violent protest that rocked the state -owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo, has submitted it’s report and recommendations.
Recall that the rampage embarked upon by some students of the institution on the 22nd of January, 2018 triggered by the policy of ‘No School Fees, No Examination’ which resulted in wanton destruction of the school and individuals properties in the institution led to the closure of the polytechnic by the state government on the 23rd of January, 2018.
The Chairman of the committee, Pastor Oyekan Arije while submitting the report said the committee had several meetings with the management, Board of Studies, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Non – Academic Staff Union, NASU, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, SSANIP, Students Union Government, SUG, and other stakeholders in and outside the polytechnic before arriving at its recommendations.
Arije who described the destruction and vandalism by the students as unacceptable, noted that one can hardly believe that students could be so callous as to destroy their own future.
According to the commi’ttee Chair, the destruction was massive and wanton, especially the Information Communication Technology, ICT centre, which he said would take some time to restore.
“We’ve made our recommendations for the governor to consider “.
Responding, the Governor of Ondo State, Barr. Rotimi Akeredolu, thanked the Chairman of the committee and the members for accepting the task and the great work they’ve done.
Governor Akeredolu who noted that the properties destroyed according to the committee, was worth over N168 Million, while insisting that the students will pay for the damages to the last kobo in order to serve as deterrent to others.
” I least expected any set of people , even students who are expected to appreciate the tools of learning to have decided to destroy what is meant for their interest.
Whatever it will take, the Students will definitely pay. It’s either they pay or they don’t want to go to school again “.
Akeredolu affirmed that those students arrested, their trial will be completed and those found culpable will face the wrath of law.
Akeredolu added that the report will be contentiosly looked into .
“We will look at the report, we will then meet with the governing council and the inquiry committee to know the amount of reparation to aportion to each students; Akeredolu said “.
Recall that the inquiry Committee is Chaired by Pastor Oyekan Arije while Engineer Akintunde Aminu and Comrade Francis Falohun are members, and Mr. Olufemi O. Moyinolorun served as Secretary.
